The Thorns of the English Rose

(Archive post: Orginally written March 2015)

Sarah Burton cited ‘nature, fragility and beauty’ as the inspirations for the AW15 Alexander McQueen collection. The garments evoked a Miss Havisham-esque romantic melancholy, combining delicate femininity with Gothic darkness. In the words of Burton, the collection expressed the ‘idea that something can be so beautiful on the verge of decay’.

The delicate sensuality was reminiscent of Egon Schiele’s drawings; the pink frills echoed the figural distoration which characterizes Schiele’s work.
